Description

Podarcis carbonelli berlengensis is an exceptional species sequestered in the berlengas archipelago's distinct ecosystem. With a diet mainly composed of invertebrates like ants and beetles, it plays an integral role in controlling their populations. Remarkably, during pairing season, podarcis carbonelli berlengensis engages in elaborate mate guarding rituals, potentially to counter high mate competition, highlighting an intriguing adaptative behavior in response to its isolated environment.

Diet

Podarcis carbonelli berlengensis primarily survives on a diet comprised mainly of invertebrates, showing a preference for arthropods such as beetles and spiders, and occasionally small snails. Their feeding habits largely depend on the availability of these prey in their environment.

Appearance

Podarcis carbonelli berlengensis is a compact, medium-sized lizard boasting a streamlined body. Its skin, textured with fine scales, greatly ranges from an earthy, greenish-brown to vibrant rusty hues. Highly distinctive, dark crossbands mark podarcis carbonelli berlengensis's back, contrasting sharply with its lighter sides. Immature individuals tend more towards a subtle greyscale coloration, while the males are often more vibrantly colored than the females. No subspecies differences are known.

Behavior

Podarcis carbonelli berlengensis displays terrestrial and diurnal patterns, largely active during daylight hours on rocky inclines in their coastal habitat. Territorial by nature, individual males claim and defend specific areas against rivals. Notably, prior to the breeding season, males demonstrate courtship rituals such as tail vibration and head-bobbing, a distinctive behavior in its species.
