Description

Weller's salamander (Plethodon welleri) is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. This species in endemic to the southeastern mountain range of the United States. It is mainly found in North Carolina near Grandfather Mountain. These salamanders have a unique metallic spotting which distinguishes them from other Plethodon species and other salamanders in the area. They mainly inhabit cool forests with rocky areas. Weller's salamander subsists primarily on a abundant diet of small invertebrates, notably favoring insects and spiders. This species demonstrates a particular preference for soft-bodied larvae and mollusks when available.

Appearance

Weller's salamander is a medium-sized salamander with a slender body and smooth, moist skin. Males have a longer, more pointed snout and longer legs. Its main coloration is dark gray to black, and it sports a striking pattern of white or silver spots on its back and sides. The tail is laterally compressed and features a sharp keel on top. Weller's salamander lacks external gills and lungs; respiration is through the skin and the tissues lining the mouth.

Behavior

Weller's salamander is a terrestrial salamander exhibiting nocturnal habits and secretive behavior, hiding under forest floor debris. It displays a unique courtship ritual, with males using pheromones to attract mates. Mildly territorial, weller's salamander rarely resort to aggression in disputes. Their survival adaptations include their cryptic coloration and moist skin, which help them camouflage and retain moisture in their forest habitats.
