Description

The southern gray-cheeked salamander (Plethodon metcalfi) is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae endemic to the area where North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia adjoin each other in the southeastern United States. The species has a known altitudinal range of 256 to 1,295 m in the mountains of the region. Where their ranges overlap, it hybridizes with P. jordani and P. teyahalee. Southern gray-cheeked salamander predominantly feeds on small invertebrates, with a particular penchant for arthropods. Its diet extensively consists of ants, mites, spiders, and beetles aiding in nutrient acquisition and growth.

Appearance

Southern gray-cheeked salamander is a fairly small salamander, being no larger than 13 cm. It possesses a slender, elongated body covered in smooth, moist skin. Southern gray-cheeked salamander's coloration is primarily dark cocoa brown, but can feature a mottled pattern of lighter and darker patches. Adult males bear a distinct light chin patch. This species lacks tails, wings, or horns, but houses 12-14 costal grooves along each side of the body.

Behavior

Southern gray-cheeked salamander is a solitary creature characterized by crepuscular activity, peaking at dusk and dawn. Due to its inherency in high-elevation forests, it manifests strong territorial behavior and avoids wandering far from its usual habitat. Typically, it resides near streams or moist areas, making full use of its exceptional climbing abilities for foraging. These behaviors reflect southern gray-cheeked salamander's perfect adaptation to its unique ecological niche.
