Lifespan

6-10 years

Diet

Cumberland plateau salamander predominantly feeds on small invertebrates with a preference for soft-bodied organisms, such as slugs, millipedes, and various larval insects. This species shows a distinct preference for moist or humid habitats to scavenge these food items.

Appearance

Cumberland plateau salamander is a medium-sized salamander with a slim, elongated body and smooth, moist skin. The primary color is dark brown or black, often with faint white speckles. Notable features include two bright yellow or orange stripes that run from the eyes down the back, terminating before the tail. Adults maintain a consistent appearance with no significant variation due to age, gender or subspecies.

Behavior

Cumberland plateau salamander is a nocturnal species primarily characterized by its solitary and territorial nature. Instinctive behaviours include meticulous grooming and foraging at nightfall for food. Known for its seclusive proximity boundaries, territorial behaviors involve active defense mechanisms through aggressive physical confrontations. Notably, this species does not undertake migratory patterns, consistently reinforcing its claim over a single geographical territory.
