6-10 years
Diet
Southeastern slimy salamander primarily feeds on small invertebrates living within its terrestrial ecosystem. This includes a significant consumption of arthropods, particularly insect larvae, contributing majorly to their energy intake.
Appearance
Southeastern slimy salamander is small and slender-bodied, typically measuring about 5.5 cm in length. Its skin is moist and smooth, spanning shades from dark brown to black. Notably, it possesses an irregular pattern of yellowish-white spots, concentrated more towards the rear end. Differences in appearance due to age are apparent: juveniles often have a brightly-colored venter, which darkens with age. No remarkable differences exist due to gender or subspecies.
Behavior
Southeastern slimy salamander exhibits nocturnal habits, having most activity during evening and night. It secludes in leaf litter and under logs during daytime. Often terrestrial, it ascends trees in moist environments. Famously cryptic, its skin coloration camouflages it against natural backdrops. Southeastern slimy salamander demonstrates a solitary behavior except in mating seasons, where males aggressively protect their territories.
