Diet
Northern slimy salamander is primarily an insectivorous species predominantly found consuming a varied diet of arthropods. This includes ants, beetles, spiders, and various invertebrates found within its forest habitat.
Appearance
The northern slimy salamander is a small, slender salamander with shiny, smooth skin. Its length usually ranges from 10-20 centimeters. Boasting coloration from bluish-black to metallic grey, the body is speckled with irregular white or bluish white spots. The tail is keeled with a rounded tip. There is no significant sexual dimorphism or various age-related visual differences.
Behavior
Northern slimy salamander is primarily nocturnal, actively foraging for insects at night. Rather than forming social groups, they lead largely solitary existences, occasionally demonstrating territorial behavior. Remarkably, during times of excessive heat or drought, they employ a behavior called 'estivation', retreating to cool, moist underground refuges.
