Description

The brown long-eared bat is known for its social habits, hunting skills, and striking appearance. With brown fur and distinctive, large floppy ears, it is sure to capture your attention. It is a true hunter, using its echolocation abilities to locate insects in the dark. Roosting in large groups in caves, trees, and buildings, the Brown long-eared bat is also a social animal. It has a remarkable migration pattern, traveling far distances to avoid harsh winter weather.

Diet

Brown long-eared bat employs a predominantly insectivorous eating behavior, primarily dining on moths. Its diet, however, also includes spiders and other small invertebrates, which it skillfully catches during flight.

Appearance

Brown long-eared bat is a medium-sized bat with long ears that extend beyond the tip of the snout (when laid flat) and wine-glass shaped tragus. Its fur, fine and silky, predominantly exhibits a mix of varied brown shades, with pale undersides. The species is characterized by its broad wings and pronounced facial gland. Notably, there are no significant variations in appearance due to age, gender or subspecies.

Behavior

Brown long-eared bat is a nocturnal species, often found roosting in loft spaces and tree cavities during daylight. This species displays a preference for hunting insects in open spaces, often flying low to the ground. Social interactions mainly occur during the roosting period. Its navigational abilities and precise localization of prey are achieved through sophisticated echolocation mechanisms.
