Description
The Heller Strip Fruit Vampire is a medium sized member of the genus of strip fruit vampires. Like other species of this genus, Platyrrhinus helleri also has a distinctive bright stripe on its back, beginning between the ears and ending at the tail's end, and a strip above and below each eye. The coat of the Heller Strip Fruit Vampire is usually brown, with the peritoneum lighter than the fur on the back. From other representatives of the genus Platyrrhinus it differs by the strongly hairy edge of the tail flight skin. The Heller Strip Fruit Vampire weighs an average of 14 g and has a wingspan of up to 30 cm. As a representative of the leaf noses it has a pronounced nose leaf. The name Platyrrhinus derives from the Greek platys (= flat, flat) and rhinos (= nose). The species name helleri, which also occurs in the German name, honors Karl Bartholomäus Heller, who has collected the type of this species.

Diet
Heller's broad-nosed bat is primarily frugivorous, with a strong preference for fruits such as figs. This bat species also supplements its diet with insects, revealing an omnivorous side, particularly during periods of fruit scarcity.
Appearance
Heller's broad-nosed bat is a medium-sized bat with a long snout and fur that is predominantly dark brown. It stands out due to its large, rounded ears, short tail, and the presence of a white strip that runs across the top of its back. The bat's wings are broad and black, designed for quick, agile flight. There's no significant difference in appearance between sexes or with age progression.
Behavior
Heller's broad-nosed bat is a nocturnal species with a predominantly solitary lifestyle. This bat is known to primarily eat fruit, but will also consume insects. Unusually, heller's broad-nosed bat exhibits a 'hovering' feeding behavior, allowing it to pick fruit from trees mid-flight. They are non-migratory, instead marking and defending a specific territory year-round.
