Description
The twist-necked turtle, Platemys platycephala, also known as the flat-headed turtle, is distributed widely across northern South America. Twist-necked turtles have extremely flat shells that help them hide from predators under rocks and debris. When threatened, this turtle withdraws by twisting its head into its shell. Appearance
Twist-neck turtle is a medium-size freshwater turtle with a broad, flattened shell, hues ranging from dark brown to black. Their plastron, or underbelly, is usually yellowish with distinctive black borders. They have a triangular-shaped head, possibly an adaptation for burrowing into mud and sand.
Behavior
Twist-neck turtle is primarily a nocturnal species, exhibiting unique adaptations to its aquatic environments. Despite its solitary nature, it occasionally displays social tolerance. The species is known for its distinguishable nesting practices wherein it buries eggs in sandy riverbanks. Foraging techniques include snagging prey on water surfaces and hunting in shallow substrate.
