Description

Carvalho's Surinam toad (Pipa carvalhoi) is a species of frog in the Pipidae family endemic to Brazil. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, dry savanna, moist savanna, subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, freshwater marshes, ponds, and aquaculture ponds. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Carvalho's surinam toad sustains primarily on a carnivorous diet, feeding predominantly on small invertebrates, particularly arthropods and aquatic insects. It hunts at night, employing a sit-and-wait strategy to consume its prey.

Appearance

Carvalho's surinam toad is a small frog with a compressed body and saggy skin, which is reminiscent of a deflated balloon. Its versatile skin, varying from brown to olive green with occasional black spots, camouflages it smoothly in the environment. Carvalho's surinam toad takes peculiarity to new heights with its peculiar dorsal eyespots, adding further to its distinctive appearance. There are no noticeable differences in appearance due to age, gender or subspecies.

Behavior

Carvalho's surinam toad is an aquatic creature renowned for unique reproductive behavior where the female carries eggs in dorsal skin pockets until they metamorphose into froglets. Mainly nocturnal, this species spends the majority of its time camouflaged and stationary, waiting for prey, emphasizing an ambush predation strategy. Notably, it does not exhibit social interaction outside mating periods.
