Diet

Zanzibar red colobus's diet largely comprises of young, tender leaves. It also feeds on fruits, flowers, and shoots. The species has been observed to prioritize certain food items based on seasonality and nutritional content.

Appearance

The zanzibar red colobus is a medium-sized primate with a lanky build and long limbs. It possesses a dense, woolly pelt that is primarily chestnut-red. The animal's tail is notably elongated and prehensile, with a tuft at the end. Mane-like fur encircles its face, and its undersides and tail tip are usually white. The infants are born with pinkish-white skin, which darkens as they mature, and their fur color differs by being silver-grey.

Behavior

Zanzibar red colobus exhibits an arboreal lifestyle in the coastal and riverine forests. It is known for its allogrooming behavior and foraging in groups, indicating a social structure. Zanzibar red colobus predominantly consumes leaves, a behavior which dictates its slow-moving nature and diurnal activity. Interestingly, males may exhibit call displays to defend group territory.
