Description
The Chinese water dragon (Physignathus cocincinus) is a species of agamid lizard native to China and mainland Southeast Asia. It is also known as the Asian water dragon, Thai water dragon, and green water dragon. The genus name is Greek for "inflated jaw".

Appearance
Chinese water dragon is a sizable reptile, measuring up to a meter in length. It has a robust, elongated body and a large, triangular head. The animal sports a smooth, bright green or yellow-green skin, sometimes displaying blue or turquoise patterns along the body. Its throat expands into a noticeable pouch, especially in males. Notably, it has a long, slender tail, constituting more than half of its total length. Gender-linked color variations exist, with males typically presenting more vibrant hues.
Behavior
Chinese water dragon indulges primarily in daytime activity, showing unique basking behavior for self-regulation of body temperature. Paired with its strong swimming skills, these reptiles excel in coastal habitats. They exhibit territorial tendencies, with males often displaying their enlarged and brightly colored throat sacs to discourage rivals. Unlike many reptiles, chinese water dragon exhibits social hierarchies among groups, hinting at a complex social structure.
