Diet
Inhabiting the natural forests of Latin America, physalaemus olfersii primarily feeds off tiny insects, especially ants. These frogs use their specialized tongues to latch onto the small arthropods, supplementing their diet occasionally with spiders and other small invertebrates.
Appearance
Physalaemus olfersii is a small frog species with a sturdy, round body. It has smooth, hydrated skin of varying colours, often spotted or marbled in brown, grey, or green shades. A dark triangular mark on the head and mottled hind limbs are distinctive features. The female species are typically larger and more robust than males.
Behavior
Physalaemus olfersii is characterized by its nocturnal habits, usually hiding during daytime hours, camouflaging itself well in the leaf-litter of its habitat. Males exhibit vocal territorial behavior with many using unique advertisement calls to attract mates. Primarily solitary, interactions are mostly limited to breeding season.
