Diet
Broad-tailed gecko, commonly known as the Southern Leaf-tailed Gecko, is primarily insectivorous. It favours a diet rich in arthropods, notably spiders and insects, using their camouflage abilities to ambush these prey in their native Australian habitats.
Appearance
Broad-tailed gecko is a medium-sized, leaf-tail gecko with strikingly broad, flattened tail which bears a strong resemblance to a leaf. It displays a rugged skin texture, and varies in color from grey to brown with darker patterns. Noteworthy are the fringed edges running along its body, enhancing its leaf-like illusion. There are no significant differences in appearance between genders, age groups or subspecies.
Behavior
Broad-tailed gecko is a primarily nocturnal species with a solitary behavior pattern, using extensive camouflage to mimic leaf litter within its habitat for survival. Daytime is spent in hiding, tucked under tree bark or leaves. This species is particularly defensive when threatened, retracting its head and tail, showing its contrasting ventral side to deter potential predators.
