Description
Phrynocephalus mystaceus is a species of agamid lizard found in Iran, North Afghanistan, Eastern Caucasus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and possibly in south of Astrakhan Oblast. With the tail straightened, adults can reach a length of up to 24 centimetres in length and is notable for its red oral display frill.

Appearance
Secret toadhead agama is a medium-sized lizard with an angular body, bead-like scales, and a long tail. Primarily grey-brown, it camouflages well with desert rock, but males feature a distinctive red gular pouch. Its most striking feature is a large fringed scale row above the eye, which resembles eyelashes. This unique 'eyelash' feature is less prominent in females and non-existent in juveniles.
Behavior
Secret toadhead agama is a diurnal species, emerging from underground burrows to bask and forage. They're known for their distinctive threat display, where they raise their body, open their mouth, and extend a fringed scale-covered pouch. Solitary by nature, they mark territories via glandular secretions, often responding to intruders with aggressive physical displays. The species displays remarkable adaptations to desert life, including camouflage and heat dissipation mechanisms.
