The Natal dwarf puddle frog (Phrynobatrachus natalensis) is a species of frog in the Phrynobatrachidae family. It is found in Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe,

Diet

Natal dwarf puddle frog primarily thrive on invertebrates, with a special preference for ants and other small arthropods. Their diet typically varies based on their geographical location and availability of food sources.

Appearance

Natal dwarf puddle frog are small to medium-sized frogs with a smooth, moist skin. They sport a barrel-shaped body and short legs. Their prominent back ridge distinguishes them, running from the eye to the hip. Their colouring varies from light brown to darker shades, often with irregular dark markings. Their belly colour contrasts with a uniform white. There are no significant differences in appearance between genders, ages, or subspecies.

Behavior

Natal dwarf puddle frog displays nocturnal behavior, actively foraging at night for invertebrates. This species is typically solitary, only converging for mating. Notably, females lay adhesive eggs on water surfaces instead of attaching them to substrates. Their survival strategy includes an exceptional ability to cope with dry conditions by enduring aestivation.
