Description
The Italian pool frog (Pelophylax bergeri) is a species of frog in the family Ranidae. Found on the mainland of Italy and the Mediterranean islands of Sicily, Elba, Corsica and Sardinia, its natural habitats are rivers, swamps, freshwater lakes and freshwater marshes. It is not considered threatened by the IUCN.

Appearance
Italian Pool Frog is a medium-sized frog, characterized by its smooth, moist green-olive skin with darker spots. Males develop larger forearms than females during mating season. Usually, it has discernible yellow-brown stripes running from its eyes to its hind limbs. It lacks tail but has powerful hind legs, perfect for swimming and jumping. Its most distinctive feature is its vocal sacs, which swell considerably when the male is calling.
Behavior
Italian Pool Frog is a primarily aquatic species exhibiting nocturnal tendencies. This species demonstrates a synchronized metamorphosis, where mass overnight transformation of tadpoles occurs. During reproduction, males make distinctive calls from the water to attract females. Highly territorial, they are aggressive towards intruders. Its semi-aquatic adaptation confers survival advantages in its habitat.
