Diet

African helmeted turtle is primarily a carnivorous species, largely feasting on small invertebrates. It is fond of snails, insects and crustaceans, but also occasionally consumes fish and carrion. This resilient turtle adapts its diet according to availability of food.

Appearance

African helmeted turtle is a small to medium-sized aquatic turtle with a fairly flat, oval carapace and a smooth and submerged top. Their skin is dark to brownish-black, with occasional faint yellow speckles that also extend to the head. Juveniles have a softer carapace. The neck is unusually long, with a small head at the end featuring a broad, pronounced snout. They have webbed feet to facilitate swimming.

Behavior

African helmeted turtle is a solitary, semi-aquatic reptile, primarily practising a nocturnal lifestyle. Its most distinctive behaviours include an unparalleled proficient swimming capability and a unique bobbing motion while foraging underwater. Territorial aggression is observed in males, symbolized by inflated throat displays. Predominantly carnivorous, african helmeted turtle adapts well to its environment, frequently altering its diet based on available prey.
