Description
A freshwater species of turtle occupying flowing and stagnant bodies of water in sub-Saharan Africa, the african helmeted turtle is popularity in the pet trade. A small, robust, and adaptable species, it is known as well for capturing and drowning prey significantly larger than itself.

African helmeted turtle predominantly feeds on various aquatic organisms. Apart from algae and aquatic plants, a significant part of its diet comprises of crustaceans, insects, and small fish. Its omnivorous feeding behavior underscores its adaptability.
Appearance
African helmeted turtle is a small-sized turtle with a semi-domed, brown-shelled carapace averaging around 20 cm in length. The shell is often immersed in algae, which in combination with the natural patterning, camouflages the turtle effectively. Its skin is brownish-black and thick, while its neck is elongated and able to extend widely. The dark, beady eyes are situated at the front of the head. There is no noticeable difference between sexes.
Behavior
African helmeted turtle are predominantly solitary, commonly adopting a sedentary lifestyle. They display a distinctive shell-tucking self-defense mechanism in response to perceived threats. These animals are primarily carnivorous with a remarkable preference for aquatic invertebrates. Nesting and reproduction involve unique nose-tapping courtship behaviors, highlighting their unique behavioral repertoire.
