Description
Pelobates cultripes is a toad species in the family Pelobatidae. It is known under many different common names, including the western spadefoot, Iberian spadefoot toad, Spanish spadefoot toad, and Wagler's spadefoot toad. It is found in parts of France, Spain, and Portugal.

Western spadefoot exhibits a carnivorous diet comprising mainly of arthropods. It utilizes its exceptional burrowing abilities to prey primarily on ants, beetles, and spiders. Occasionally, it may also feed on worms and small invertebrates.
Appearance
Western spadefoot is a medium-sized European toad with a relatively pointed snout and a robust body. Its skin is warty and predominantly golden brown with numerous irregular darker blotches. The underside of the toad is off-white and can show faint mottling. Its eyes are strikingly golden with a horizontally situated pupil. Males are slightly smaller than females and can be identified by the large calluses on their forelegs during the breeding season.
Behavior
Western spadefoot is a nocturnal, terrestrial amphibian notable for its burrowing activity. Primarily solitary, it uses its unique shovel-like hind legs to dig extensive burrow systems. Although generally inoffensive, it engages in posturing displays when threatened. Absorption through skin serves as their primary means of hydration and respiration. Their loud, characteristic mating calls during spring highlight a key aspect of their reproductive behavior.
