Pedioplanis undata, the western sand lizard or plain sand lizard, is a species of lizard found in South Africa and Namibia.
General Info
Lifespan
5-7 years
Diet
Plain sand lizard predominantly subsists on small invertebrates as its dietary staple, specifically targeting ants and termites. Its robust jaw structure is specially adapted to crunch through tough exoskeletons. Despite this, seasonal availability of food sometimes diversifies its diet to include plant matter.
Appearance
Plain sand lizard is a slender reptile typically measuring between 60 to 70 mm. Its smooth scaly skin is primarily a vivid yellow-brown, with intricate patterns of darker brown scattered across its body. This creature has a long, tapering tail and its head features a distinctive point. There's little difference in appearance between the sexes or various life stages of the species.
Behavior
Plain sand lizard is predominantly diurnal, known for its rapid movements and adept climbing skills. This solitary reptile engages in basking, often atop bushes. Distinctively, males perform push-up displays to assert territorial dominance and attract mates. They also exhibit unique tail waving as a defensive measure against potential predators.
