Diet
As insectivores, common sand lizard primarily consume arthropods, particularly ants and beetles. They also exhibit occasional herbivorous behavior, supplementing their diet with vegetation, primarily leaves.
Appearance
Common sand lizard is a moderately slender lizard with a body length of approximately 65 to 85 mm. It has a rough, scaly skin primarily of brown or sandy color, often with thin dark lateral lines and ocelli. Its belly, however, might be cream or yellowish. The tail is cylindrical and elongated, measuring roughly twice the body length. Male individuals often exhibit more brightly colored markings than their female counterparts.
Behavior
Common sand lizard is a diurnal, solitary species that basks to regulate body temperature. Known for their rapid, jerky movement patterns while foraging for arthropods, this species often lifts two diagonally opposed limbs to dissipate heat.
