Description

The corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus) is a North American species of rat snake that subdues its small prey by constriction. It is found throughout the southeastern and central United States. Their docile nature, reluctance to bite, moderate adult size, attractive pattern, and comparatively simple care make them popular pet snakes. Corn snake primarily consume rodents, with mice being a staple in their diet. They strongly prefer live prey, employing their constricting abilities to immobilize the target before consumption.

Appearance

Corn snake is a medium-sized, slender snake with smooth, shiny scales. Their base color varies from yellow to brown adorned with orange-red, saddle-like blotches bordered in black. Hatchlings resemble adults but with more contrasting coloration. Both sexes appear similar in appearance, though females tend to be slightly larger than males.

Behavior

Corn snake displays primarily nocturnal and solitary behaviors, often seeking concealment to avoid predators. This species uses stealth and constrictive tactics for hunting, primarily feeding on small mammals and birds. While reproduction, corn snake employs unique mating dances and produces large clutches of eggs. Not known to be territorial, the creature easily adapts to varied environments.
