Diet
Smooth-fronted caiman is a carnivorous species predominantly feeding on invertebrates and small vertebrates. Favoring crustaceans and fish, this species also consumes amphibians and rodents, adopting an opportunistic feeding strategy.
Appearance
Smooth-fronted caiman is a small crocodile species with rough, bony scales that are dark-brown to black. This animal is distinguished by its broad, triangular, and flattened snout. Its body is elongated and muscular with a long tail, which is a vital tool for swimming. Interestingly, young individuals show a brighter, more vivid coloration, often featuring lighter bands across the body and tail.
Behavior
Smooth-fronted caiman is a mainly nocturnal species, exhibiting secretive, solitary behavior. It utilises a sit-and-wait hunting strategy for catching prey. Unlike many crocodilian species, smooth-fronted caiman is known for its arboreal capabilities, able to climb trees and bushes. Its territorial markings are unidentified but it exhibits aggressive behavior when its territory is invaded.
