Diet

Cuvier's dwarf caiman is predominantly piscivorous, consuming mainly fish. However, its diet also includes a significant percentage of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, along with occasional small mammals, birds, and reptiles.

Appearance

Cuvier's dwarf caiman is a small-sized crocodile with a slender, elongated body covered in tough, heavily armored skin. Primarily dark brown to black in color, it occasionally features lighter, amber-like patches, particularly on the belly. A distinctive curved snout and conical, sharp teeth are prominent features, while its limbs and tail are well-adapted for both terrestrial and aquatic movement. There is no significant variation in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

Cuvier's dwarf caiman is a primarily nocturnal reptile, exhibiting solitary behavior except during the breeding season. Predominantly aquatic, they display territoriality within their preferred freshwater habitats, often inhabiting burrows created in riverbanks. They possess sit-and-wait hunting strategies, patiently waiting for prey before executing a swift attack.
