Appearance
Pampas deer is a medium-sized deer, with a slender and well-proportioned body covered in reddish-brown fur. Its most striking feature is its long, forked antlers, which are exclusive to males. The underparts of its body are white, creating a striking contrast. Juveniles carry a spotted coat which they shed as they mature.
Behavior
Pampas deer is a gregarious herbivore, congregating in groups for protection against predators. Notably elusive, they display a leap-and-bound escape strategy. These animals exhibit a polygamous mating system, males competing fiercely for harems. Males also mark territory using glandular secretions. Their lifestyle primarily involves grazing, often shifting to new feeding grounds, adapting to wetland habitats during dry seasons.
