Description
The dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis), also known commonly as the African dwarf crocodile, broad-snouted crocodile, or bony crocodile, is an African crocodile that is also the smallest extant crocodile species. Recent sampling has identified three genetically distinct populations. Some feel that the findings should elevate the subspecies to full species status.

Dwarf crocodile is primarily a carnivore, predominantly feasting on crustaceans, bivalves, fishes, and amphibians. Its flexible dietary habits also include occasional consumption of carrion and plant matter.
Appearance
Dwarf crocodile is a small to medium-sized crocodile with a heavy-set body and smooth, dark olive-green skin. It has a broad, short snout and armored eyelids. Its tail, robust and elongated, aids in swimming. The animal's ventral surface is paler than the dorsal, often yellowish-white, with no significant differences in appearance between genders, ages, or subspecies.
Behavior
Dwarf crocodile exhibits nocturnal habits with solitary and territorial nature. Principally carnivorous, the animal engages in ambush predation to feed. It is also a distinguished climber and swimmer, using its skills for foraging and defense. Dwarf crocodile's mating rituals are unique, involving vocal sounds and physical movements. This species has been observed exhibiting protective behavior towards its young.
