It ranges through northeastern China, the Russian Far East, and the Korean Peninsula, but is only sporadically distributed within this range. General Info
Lifespan
10-15 years
Diet
Long-tailed clawed salamander primarily consumes small invertebrates, including insects, spiders, and crustaceans. With an opportunistic feeding behaviour, it readily feeds on available prey, emphasizing arthropods within its moist woodland habitats.
Appearance
Long-tailed clawed salamander is a medium-sized amphibian with a slender, elongated body covered in rough skin. Its predominant coloration is a mottled dark brown, offering effective camouflage in its habitat. Boasting four visibly clawed toes on each of its limbs, its name is derived from this unique attribute. It possesses a long tail that tapers to a point. There are no significant differences in appearance due to gender, age, or subspecies.
Behavior
Long-tailed clawed salamander is a nocturnal, solitary salamander found in freshwater environments. Notably, this species tends to aggressively defend its territory utilizing threat postures and lunging attacks. In response to danger, long-tailed clawed salamander curls its body, discharging sticky skin secretions to discourage predators. Its foraging mainly occurs during the night, relying heavily on tactile and olfactory cues to locate small invertebrates.
