Diet

Southern mule deer is predominantly an herbivore, with its dietary needs primarily met by foliage and twigs. It has a propensity for woody browse in fall and winter, seeking out leaves, young shoots, and buds. During spring and summer, flowers, berries, and herbs form a significant part of their diet, supplementing the energy they require to thrive.

Appearance

Southern mule deer is a medium-sized deer characterized by a slim body shape and a dense coat of fur, mostly dark brown to black. Its most distinguishable feature is its large mule-like ears, hence its colloquially known as 'black-tailed deer'. Only males possess antlers, which are forked, with a distinctive black tip on the tail. There are no significant differences in markings across various ages or genders, but slight size variation is observed among different subspecies.

Behavior

The southern mule deer is an agile, nocturnal species, mostly solitary apart from the breeding season. This deer employs a unique stotting (pronking) tactic, consisting of bouncing with all four feet hitting the ground simultaneously, to evade predators. Characterized by significant territorial behavior, males generally maintain separate territories and mark them using scent glands near the eyes. Adapted for rugged mountainous terrains, they showcase superior climbing and jumping capabilities.
