The banded water snake or southern water snake (Nerodia fasciata) is a species of mostly aquatic, nonvenomous, colubrid snake endemic to the central and southeastern United States.

Banded water snake primarily sustains on a carnivorous diet, with a particular fondness for amphibians such as frogs and toads. Its feeding habits also cover small fish, worms, and occasionally water-born insects.
Appearance
Banded water snake is a medium-sized, streamlined water snake with keeled scales. It exhibits diverse color patterns, commonly sporting crossbands of brown or black on a lighter colored base. Notably, the belly color contrasts significantly, often bright yellow or red. Its eyes are large and its head blends seamlessly into the body. There is little visible difference between genders or across ages, yielding a uniformly sleek look.
Behavior
Banded water snake is a primarily diurnal species, often seen basking on vegetation near water. It exhibits a semi-aquatic lifestyle, expertly hunting fish and amphibians. Banded water snake is known for its aggressive defensive behavior when threatened. Oviparous, females deposit eggs in damp, secluded areas. It displays a solitary behavior except during the mating season.
