Australian sea lion primarily feeds on marine animals, especially focusing on cephalopods and fishes. It demonstrates opportunistic feeding behavior, occasionally consuming seabirds and even other seals.
Appearance
Australian sea lion is a robust-bodied marine mammal, possessing a sleek, short fur coat primarily of a dark grey hue. Females and juveniles display golden or creamy highlights on the chest and underside. A noticeable crest on their broad, muscular neck and a tapered head with a rounded nose are distinctive features. Its flippers, used for agile swimming, are proportionately large with a dark dorsal surface.
Behavior
Australian sea lion are social animals living in colonies, engaging in cooperative breeding, and displaying significant maternal investment towards offspring. These animals primarily feed in coastal waters on fish and cephalopods. Single males establish and defend territories during the breeding season, showing aggression towards intruders. Australian sea lion prefers rest in the daytime, becoming more active at dusk and during the night.
