New zealand jewel gecko sustains itself primarily on a diet of invertebrates, favoring bush crickets for their abundance and ease of capture. However, it will not shy away from indulging in smaller arachnids when available.
Appearance
An arboreal lizard, new zealand jewel gecko showcases a slender body and rough, yet vibrant skin. Principally emerald-green, its scales project a unique mosaic pattern through spots of yellow and blue hues. The animal possesses a prehensile tail and elongated digits, adapted to its tree-dwelling lifestyle. Adults exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males having pronounced crests along their back and females, a lighter colouration and size.
Behavior
New zealand jewel gecko demonstrates arboreal characteristics, skillfully maneuvering and foraging among tree branches. The species is notably diurnal, indulging in sunbathing behavior. New zealand jewel gecko display a solitary nature, showing territorial tendencies especially during the breeding season. Exceptionally, its vivid coloration does not serve as camouflage, instead it is utilized for territorial and mating displays.
