Diet
Proboscis monkey's diet mainly consists of young leaves, shoots, and fruits, especially those from leguminous trees. Occasionally, it is known to consume insect larvae and small vertebrates, making it a selective omnivore.
Appearance
The proboscis monkey is a medium-sized primate notable for its pot belly, brown-grey fur, and bare, long-nosed face, which swells and reddens during mating seasons, more prominently in males. Short limbs end in opposable thumbs, aiding in their arboreal lifestyle. This species' infant's fur is white and darkens with age, becoming a deep reddish-brown at maturity. A unique feature of males is a pendulous, large nose, while females possess a smaller upturned version.
Behavior
Proboscis monkey is highly arboreal, spending most of its time aboveground foraging, resting and even traveling in the trees. Notably, it's a social species, living in large groups with a complex hierarchy. Swimming is a unique characteristic, showcasing underwater foraging and evasion from predators. Its dominant males are known to employ loud callings as an assertive territorial display.
