Lifespan
7-12 years
Diet
Eastern coral snake primarily feeds on other snakes, making it ophiophagous. Particular prey includes small nonvenomous snakes and occasionally, fellow venomous species. Its diet reflects its specialist predator status.
Appearance
Eastern coral snake is a thin-bodied snake with smooth, glossy scales. It measures up to 1.5 meters long and exhibits a bright, distinct pattern: alternating rings of black, red and yellow. While both genders share the same appearance, juveniles are brighter in color. This species does not have any outstanding features like wings or horns but is easily recognizable by its coloration and narrow-shaped head.
Behavior
Eastern coral snake is a solitary and strictly nocturnal species, primarily known for its lethal venomous bite used mainly for predation, rather than defensive purposes. Its low activity level hides a very effective hunting strategy; it waits in burrows or under leaf litter for prey. Unlike other snake species, eastern coral snake does not constrict its prey but relies solely on its potent neurotoxic venom.
