Description
Microhyla ornata (commonly known as the ornate narrow-mouthed frog, ornate narrow-mouthed toad, or ornamented pygmy frog) is a species of microhylid frog found in South Asia. This amphibian is distributed in Kashmir, Nepal, peninsular India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. It was previously considered to be the same species as Microhyla fissipes, therefore the aforementioned common names can refer to either species.

As insectivores, ornamented pygmy frog primarily consume small arthropods. Its dietary habits show a significant preference for ants and termites, including other small invertebrates, featuring an adaptive response to seasonal food availability.
Appearance
The ornamented pygmy frog is a small, slim frog, grown-ups reaching only up to 2cm in length. Its smooth, shiny skin varies from light to dark brown, usually featuring a distinctive X-shaped mark on the back. Its front and hind limbs are small, with webbed feet. Males exhibit an inflatable vocal sac under the throat which turns dark blue during the breeding season. Its eyes contain horizontal pupils, lending ornamented pygmy frog a unique look among amphibians.
Behavior
Ornamented pygmy frog are small, nocturnal amphibians that exhibit largely solitary behavior. They engage in unique vocalization as a form of communication and mating call. Their survival strategy includes effective concealment techniques within leaf litter, which is also their primary habitat for laying eggs.
