The painted chorus frog (Microhyla butleri, also commonly known as Butler's narrow-mouthed toad, Butler's pigmy frog, Butler's rice frog, Butler's ricefrog, noisy frog, or tubercled pygmy frog) is a species of frog in the family Microhylidae. It is found in northeast India, Myanmar, southern China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, and Singapore. Painted chorus frog mainly sustains itself on a diet of small insects, specifically favoring ants and termites. The species exhibits nocturnal feeding activity, foraging heavily during damp night conditions.
Appearance
Painted chorus frog is a diminutive amphibian with a round body shape and smooth, damp skin. Its size doesn't exceed 2 cm. Its coloring primarily consists of various shades of brown, sometimes displaying black spots or streaks. The belly region is usually lighter, often creamy or yellowish. Features such as horns, wings, or a prominent tail are not present. Both sexes look similar, no significant visual differences exist.
Behavior
Painted chorus frog is predominantly nocturnal, showcasing foraging activities more intensively during the night. This species is also distinctly solitary, meeting only for mating purposes. For the survival in its native tropical habitats, it has developed an effective camouflage ability to blend with leaf litter and damp soil, aiding in its evasion from predators.
