Diet

East indian upland tortoise predominantly subsists on a herbivorous diet, with a penchant for specific leafy vegetables and fruits. It significantly consumes soft-stemmed plants, fallen fruits, and is noted for its fondness for mushrooms.

Appearance

East indian upland tortoise is a large land turtle characterized by its brown, domed shell, measuring up to 2 feet. It has a distinct leathery texture on its skin and an unusually long, prehensile tail. Its visible scaled legs hint its terrestrial lifestyle. Noteworthy are its individualistic scutes, having a star-like pattern. There are no marked distinctions in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

East indian upland tortoise is predominantly diurnal, displaying herbivorous foraging behaviors. Notably, it uses its limbs and jaws to manipulate food. This species constructs elaborate nests for egg-laying, unusual for a terrestrial chelonian. East indian upland tortoise tends to be solitary except in breeding periods, marking its territory through scent trails. Its behavior is adapted for survival in rainforest environments.
