Diet
Barbary macaque, also known as the Barbary macaque, is an omnivorous species that relies mostly on a diverse diet. Leaves, fruits, and insects represent a large proportion of their dietary intake. However, they also consume other plant materials, small animals, and roots when available.
Appearance
Barbary macaque is a medium-sized primate with a robust body covered in dense, woolly fur. The general hue ranges from light brown to grey, with a red tint on the belly. The most striking feature is its pink or reddish face, devoid of fur, surrounded by a ruff of hair, giving the appearance of a bob-cut hairdo. Adult males typically possess larger canines than females. Its tail is vestigial, barely noticeable through the fur.
Behavior
Barbary macaque are social primates with a hierarchical group dynamic, often led by an alpha male. Known for their unique ability to use tools for foraging, they exhibit cooperation while gathering food. These primates also engage in cohesive grooming rituals and display complex vocal communication. Territorial in nature, barbary macaque defend their habitats aggressively if threatened.
