Description
Locally known as yaki or wolai, its skin and hairless face is, with the exception of some white hair in the shoulder range, entirely jet black. Unusual for a primate, it has striking reddish-brown eyes. The long muzzle with high cheeks and the long hair tuft, or crest, at the top of the head are remarkable features. It has an "apelike" appearance due to its almost non-existent, non-visible, vestigial tail stub of only approximately 2 cm (1 in). With a total body length of 44 cm (17 in) to 60 cm (24 in) and a weight of 3.6 kg (8 lb) to 10.4 kg (23 lb), it is one of the smaller macaque species. Its life expectancy is estimated at approximately 20 years in the wild.

Diet
Celebes crested macaque primarily consumes fruits, comprising about 60% of their diet. An opportunistic feeder, it also devours small animals, insects, leaves and flowers, adapting to seasonal changes in food availability.
Appearance
The celebes crested macaque is a medium-sized primate with a stout body, covered in black fur. It has a distinctively large nose, particularly prominent in males. Younger individuals sport lighter coats which darken with age. Celebes crested macaque lacks a tail, but features an expressive face with intriguing deep-set eyes. Bright pinkish patches adorn the rump area, contrasting sharply with the overall dark coloration. The unusual facial and body characteristics combined give celebes crested macaque its unique appearance.
Behavior
Celebes crested macaque exhibits highly social behaviors, living in large multi-male, multi-female groups with strict dominance hierarchies. These primates groom extensively for bonding and are also known to have intricate facial expressions and vocalizations for communication. Foraging primarily involves fruit, supplemented by leaves, flowers, and insects. Celebes crested macaque exhibits territorial behaviors, engaging in loud vocal displays and physical confrontations to defend their areas.
