Diet
Japanese macaque, known as the Japanese macaque, primarily consumes fruits. However, it displays a diverse diet including leaves, seeds, fungi, invertebrates, and occasionally soil and bark. This breadth testifies the animal's adaptability to changing food availability.
Appearance
The japanese macaque has a sturdy body frame covered in dense, dark-brown to greyish fur. Its face, hands, and feet are hairless, bearing a lighter, pinkish hue. Typically, they possess expressive, round eyes and ears on the sides of their head. Adult males are distinguishable from females by their slightly larger size and cheek pads. They sport a relatively short tail that does not play a role in their motion.
Behavior
Japanese macaque is a highly social species, known for matrilineal social structures, often engaging in grooming and vocal communication. It exhibits a versatile foraging strategy, consuming fruits, leaves, seeds, and small invertebrates. Notably, japanese macaque displays complex behaviors like hot spring bathing, highlighting thermal regulation adaptations in frigid environments.
