Description
Lycodon rustrati, also known as Ruhstrat's wolf snake, the mountain wolf snake, or the Formosa wolf snake, is a species of non-venomous colubrid snake found in Taiwan, southern and eastern China, and northern Vietnam.
General Info
Lifespan
10-15 years
Diet
The primary food of ruhstrat's wolf snake is various types of invertebrates, particularly insects. It shows a strong preference for ants, beetles, and spiders. Its feeding habit is nocturnal and largely ground-based.
Appearance
Ruhstrat's wolf snake is a medium-sized snake with a slender body and a round cross-section. It has smooth, glossy scales mainly in black and white. Unique distinctive features include wide, dark bands alternating with thin white bands running the length of its body. The head is slightly wider than the neck, enhancing its streamlined shape. There is no significant variation in the appearance between age groups, genders, or subspecies.
Behavior
Ruhstrat's wolf snake is a nocturnal and solitary species, predominantly terrestrial in nature but capable of climbing. It exhibits a powerful, non-lethal, envenomation tactic to immobilize its prey before feeding. This species houses in secretive areas during daytime, like under rocks, making it hard to observe in its natural habitats.
