Deer gecko is a carnivorous gecko species with a preference for small invertebrates. Considered an arthropod specialist, it primarily consumes ants, with termites and beetles also forming significant parts of its diet.
Appearance
Deer gecko is a small and slender lizard with fine granular scales, predominantly sandy in color blending well with its desert habitat. Its back is adorned with irregular darker patches, creating a marbled appearance. This lizard lacks any significant tail, horn, or wing-like structures. Age and gender do not manifest in conspicuous differences in appearance.
Behavior
Deer gecko is a nocturnal, solitary gecko that spends most of its day under bark or rocks. It forages for food at night, feeding primarily on insects. Its social interaction is minimal, usually observed only during breeding seasons. Despite being relatively sedentary, deer gecko has unique survival behavior of dropping its tail when threatened which diverts the predator's attention allowing it to escape.
