Description
The forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is one of three living species of elephants. The forest elephant is only found in the rainforests of Africa. Previously, the forest elephant and the related savannah elephant (Loxodonta africana) were counted among the same species, the African elephant. However, genetic research has shown that these are two separate species.

Diet
African forest elephant primarily feeds on a diet rich in bark, leaves, and fruits from various tropical tree species. It favor specific species like Afzelia africana, indicating a preferential feeding behavior.
Appearance
African forest elephant is a large animal with a distinctive elongated trunk, long curved tusks, and large flapping ears. Its body is covered with thick, wrinkled skin, which is greyish-brown. This species is characterized by its rounded head and straight tusks. It lacks significant differences in appearance due to age or gender.
Behavior
African forest elephant exhibits matriarchal social structures with strong familial ties, promoting cooperative care of offspring. Distinguished by complex vocal and olfactory communication systems, this species demonstrates memory-based, spatial foraging, feeding predominantly on bark and leaves. Territorially non-aggressive, african forest elephant maintains a fluid home range rather than fixed territories. Adapted behaviors for survival include trunk usage for feeding, drinking, and thermo-regulation.
