The southern brown tree frog (Litoria ewingii), also known as the brown tree frog, whistling tree frog, or Ewing's tree frog, is a species of tree frog native to Australia: most of southern Victoria, eastern South Australia, southern New South Wales from about Ulladulla—although this species is reported to occur further north—and throughout Tasmania including the Bass Strait Islands, in which state it is the most frequently encountered frog. Appearance

Southern brown tree frog is a small frog with a slender body, smooth skin, and long, slender legs. It displays a dominant coloration of brown or green, often adorned with black markings or golden spots. Males and females are relatively similar, with males sometimes being slightly smaller. Notable features include large, bulging eyes, distinct tympanums (ear drums), and a partially webbed foot structure.

Behavior

Southern brown tree frog is predominantly a nocturnal, arboreal species. It hunts for small invertebrates and employs a sit-and-wait tactic. Mating behavior is prolific, involving loud choruses of males attracting females to water bodies for breeding. Unique to this species is the male's winter breeding chorus. While generally solitary, they exhibit social dynamics during breeding.
