Description
The relict leopard frog (Lithobates onca) is a species of frog in the Ranidae family, endemic to the United States. It is found in Colorado, extreme northwestern Arizona, and adjacent Nevada and southwestern Utah, although its present range seems to be restricted to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Its natural habitat is freshwater springs and their outlets. It is threatened by habitat loss to agriculture and water development as well as invasive species.

Relict leopard frog possesses an insectivorous diet, primarily preying on aquatic invertebrates. Notably, it has a preference for consuming beetles, spiders, and mosquito larvae. Additionally, juveniles frequently feed on small crustaceans.
Appearance
Relict leopard frog are medium-sized frogs with a robust body shape. They have smooth skin which is predominantly dark brown or black, intricately patterned with green or gold markings that provide camouflage in their environment. Relict leopard frog are distinguished by their long, powerful hind legs adapted for rapid leaping, and webbed feet suited for swimming. Although females tend to be larger than males, there are no other significant gender-based differences in appearance.
Behavior
Relict leopard frog is a predominantly nocturnal amphibian, coming to land at night for foraging. Uniquely, this species forms breeding congregations in temporal desert tinajas. Relict leopard frog's territorial behavior involves the males producing underwater vocalizations to attract females and ward off other males. Mating is followed by retreat into underwater hiding places, exhibiting a behavior adapted for survival in its harsh environment.
