The Chiricahua leopard frog (Lithobates chiricahuensis syn. Rana chiricahuensis) is a species of frog in the family Ranidae, the true frogs. It is native to Mexico and Arizona and New Mexico in the United States. Chiricahua leopard frog thrives on a diet primarily consisting of small invertebrates such as insects and spiders. Larval chiricahua leopard frog feed on algae, detritus, and small aquatic organisms.
Appearance
Chiricahua leopard frog is a medium-sized frog with smooth, moist skin. Possessing a dorsal coloration that varies from bronze to dark green, its appearance is distinguished by unique lemon-yellow groins and thighs. Additionally, the underside is cream-colored. A longitudinal fold of skin runs down each side of the back. Male individuals are characterized by larger forearms and vocal sacs.
Behavior
Chiricahua leopard frog is largely nocturnal, breeding primarily in intermittent streams, while foraging in crevices and under rocks within its rocky habitat. Usually solitary, they use distinct mating calls to find partners. For survival, chiricahua leopard frog is adept at camouflaging within its rocky surroundings and relies largely on its acute sense of hearing to evade predators.
