Description

The black swamp snake is a small, thin snake, usually 25–38 cm (10–15 in) long (including tail); the record size is 55 cm (22 in). It is uniformly black on the dorsum, with a bright orange or red belly.

North florida swamp snake primarily consumes amphibians like frogs and toads, supplementing this diet with fish, crayfish, and insects found within its wetland habitat. This species exhibits opportunistic feeding behavior, adapting to the available food sources.

Appearance

North florida swamp snake is a slender, small-sized semi-aquatic snake with smooth scales. It predominantly exhibits a grayish to dark brown body, often with a series of black spots or a faint stripe on its back. Its underside is distinctly yellowish. Adult north florida swamp snakes have a flat, narrow head with a sharp snout. Unlike many other snake species, there are no substantial differences between sexes or due to age.

Behavior

North florida swamp snake are elusive, semi-aquatic creatures, often utilising their innate camouflage abilities for concealment in their aquatic environment. They lead solitary lives, showing a secretive nature that can make them difficult to observe in the wild. Notably, their diet mainly consists of small fish and amphibians, making them proficient aquatic hunters. Markings of territory have yet to be observed for this species.
