Description

The spotted grass frog or spotted marsh frog (Limnodynastes tasmaniensis) is a terrestrial frog native to Australia. It is distributed throughout all of New South Wales and Victoria, eastern South Australia, the majority of Queensland, and eastern Tasmania. It is also naturalised in Western Australia, having been unintentionally introduced at Kununurra in the 1970s, apparently during the relocation of several hundred transportable homes from Adelaide.

Appearance

Spotted grass frog is a medium-sized amphibian with smooth, damp skin. Its coloring is variable, often olive-brown, with darker spots and stripes. It has a large, flattened body and powerful hind legs adapted for burrowing. Its eyes are mounted high on its head, and the females are generally larger than the males. A noticeable feature is its broad, prominent tympanum or ear drum.

Behavior

Spotted grass frog is a solitary animal, typically active at night. It utilizes a unique posture, known as the 'unken reflex', as a defense mechanism by revealing bright underbody colors to startle predators. Its mating call, set off by rainfall, is distinctive and can reach lengthy durations. The males are highly competitive and demonstrate territorial behavior during breeding season.
