Description

Limnodynastes dumerilii is a frog species from the family Myobatrachidae. The informal names for the species and its subspecies include eastern or southern banjo frog, and bull frog. The frog is also called the pobblebonk after its distinctive "bonk" call, which is likened to a banjo string being plucked. Eastern banjo frog is a medium-sized amphibian with a robust, compact body coated in smooth, damp skin. Its color varies from greenish to brown, with unique dark markings, giving it a camouflage advantage. Notable features include strong, webbed hind legs, and a conspicuous tympanum near each eye. No significant differences exist between ages or genders in terms of appearance.

Behavior

Eastern banjo frog displays a significant reliance on seasonal pools for reproduction, creating floating foam nests to secure its eggs. Though largely nocturnal and concealed during the day, it is known to be highly vocal at night. Amid its relatively solitary lifestyle, aggressive territorial defense is observed, particularly during the breeding season. Its primary survival behavior involves cryptic coloration for camouflage in its native habitat.
