Description

Leptodactylus leptodactyloides is a species of frog in the Leptodactylidae family. Its local name is sapito leptodactilo ("slender-fingered toadlet"). It is found in the greater Amazon Basin and the Guianas (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela). Striped-pants Jungle Frog primarily feeds on invertebrates. Its digestive physiology processes a wide array of prey, from various insects such as spiders, beetles and ants, to small crustaceans and mollusks.

Appearance

Striped-pants Jungle Frog is a medium-sized amphibian with robust body shape, equipped with a thick, warty skin. It mainly flaunts a brownish-grey coloration, with distinctive darker spots scattered across its back. The species sports a short tail and lacks any fur, wings, or horns. Both males and females, as well as juveniles, share similar physical characteristics apart from slight size variations.

Behavior

Striped-pants Jungle Frog is a solitary species with a predominately nocturnal lifestyle. It is active predominantly during periods of high humidity. Striped-pants Jungle Frog displays an unusual breeding mode, forming foam nests in self-excavated burrows. Intriguingly, striped-pants Jungle Frog engages in aggressive behaviors towards intruders, defending its territory by employing a peculiar vocalization strategy.
